If I had to guess, I’d say we have almost as many bike riders stay with us as golfers.  Cycling is gaining in popularity in Utah, and cyclists know to head down south when the weather is too cold or snowy to get the bikes out in Northern Utah.

The City of St. George seems to be embracing biking, and is spending money to bolster the sport.  Good news for you bike riders, and even more reasons for you to come stay with us at St. George Vacation Rentals.

The city is planning to add more than 8 miles of bike routes and 5 miles of additional bike lanes within a few years.

Also, Utah State Transportation, Washington County, and St. George City have teamed up to repair the most popular cycling road in Utah – Route 18.  The beautiful Snow Canyon vistas as well as use in the Ironman make Route 18 a prime cyclist tourist location. Cyclists from all over the world ride SR-18 for both training and pleasure rides.

$1.6 million in improvements for bicycle travel on a scenic stretch of state Route 18 disrupted by a recent highway project will be spent.

The stretch of highway through Snow Canyon State Park was one of the most popular in the region for bikers before it was narrowed during repaving this year.  The state will now widen the shoulders to make the road even better for bike riders.

A mountain biking trail near St. George Vacation Rentals is the Bearclaw Poppy Trail.  The trail begins at the end of Navajo Drive in the neighborhood of Bloomington in the southwest part of St. George and connects to the Green Valley.   This is a nice desert mountain biking ride, which is roughly 5.5 miles one way.

Stand-outs of the ride are the not-too-tough aerobic three-mile hill climb, a couple steep climbs which are better coming down and a fast desert wash.

Bear Claw Poppy is moderate aerobic and intermediate technical. The ride is pretty quick; the 5.5 mile trail can be completed in less than 90 minutes.   However, remember this is the desert and you should bring water with you.

kids can ride the easier roads of the clay trail on the Bloomington end while more advanced riders can ride all the way to the top and really rip down to the bottom.

Another mountain biking trail is the Santa Clara Barrel Roll, which takes you through 6 miles of flowing singletrack just outside Santa Clara, Utah.  It’s an intermediate ride with loop rolls through sagebrush and barrel cacti in the Santa Clara River Reserve, where the high peaks of the surrounding mountains dominate the horizon. You can also use the dirt roads through the area to connect Barrel Roll to Stucki Springs and the course for the Red Rock Desert Rampage.
