Why “Cotton Days”?

After the outbreak of the Civil War, LDS Church President Brigham Young felt it necessary to grow cotton, if possible.  In October 1861, LDS church leaders called 309 families to establish the Cotton Mission. Many of these families that moved to Southern Utah were from the American South.  They had the experience and skills to grow cotton. A cotton factory erected soon after the Mormon settlers’ arrival produced off and on for approximately 50 years, but overall, cotton ultimately wasn’t a successful crop for the region.

Now you know why Southern Utah is called “Utah’s Dixie.”
