Holy cow, what’s that prominent, big, beautiful, old white building in the middle of St. George?
That’s the LDS Temple. In fact, it’s the oldest operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons).
Visitors to St. George from northern Utah answered the opening question with – “duh!”. However, a lot of folks that stay with us at St. George Vacation Rentals are from out of state and aren’t as familiar with Mormon locations and history.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints St. George, Utah Temple
Brigham Young chose St. George as the site where the first LDS temple in Utah would be completed. Beginning in 1871, thousands of settlers came from throughout southern Utah to build the temple. Native red sandstone quarried north of the city and plastered white was used for the building exterior. The swampy ground chosen for the Temple was packed with volcanic rock using a cannon as a pile driver. The design is Castellated Gothic style. Three ordinance rooms and eighteen sealing are inside the temple, which is 110,000 square feet. The temple located on 6 acres (address is at the end of the blog).
The landmark was dedicated on April 6-8, 1877 by Daniel H. Wells. The Temple is a holy place where members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints still perform their most sacred ceremonies.
